Accessibility Is Not Optional

One in four American adults lives with a disability. Web accessibility is a legal requirement and a business opportunity.

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that places of "public accommodation" be accessible to people with disabilities. Courts have increasingly interpreted websites as places of public accommodation, and web accessibility lawsuits have risen dramatically — from around 2,300 federal cases in 2018 to over 4,000 per year by 2024. Businesses of all sizes, from major retailers to local service providers, have been targets of these lawsuits. The average settlement is $25,000 to $100,000, and that does not include legal fees or the cost of emergency remediation.

Beyond legal compliance, web accessibility is good business. People with disabilities have a combined spending power of over $500 billion annually. Seniors — who increasingly face age-related vision, hearing, and motor challenges — represent the wealthiest demographic in the country. And accessibility improvements often benefit all users: better contrast helps everyone read on bright screens, keyboard navigation helps power users move faster, and clear information architecture helps everyone find what they need.

We audit websites against WCAG 2.1 AA standards — the benchmark referenced by most US courts and the global accessibility standard used by governments worldwide. Our audits combine automated scanning tools with manual testing by experienced accessibility specialists, because automated tools catch only about 30% of accessibility issues. The other 70% require human evaluation of things like reading order, focus management, form labeling, and the clarity of error messages.

After the audit, we provide a prioritized remediation plan that addresses critical issues first (things that completely block access for certain users) followed by major issues (things that create significant barriers) and then minor issues (things that cause inconvenience but do not block access).

Our Accessibility Services

From audit to ongoing compliance — we handle the full lifecycle.

Comprehensive audits: Full WCAG 2.1 AA audit combining automated and manual testing. Deliverable is a detailed report with every issue documented, its severity level, the WCAG criterion it violates, and the specific remediation steps needed.

Remediation: We fix the issues identified in the audit. For WordPress sites, this may involve theme modifications, plugin replacements, and content restructuring. For custom sites, it involves code changes to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. For all sites, it includes content updates like adding alt text, fixing heading hierarchy, and improving link text.

Ongoing monitoring: Accessibility is not a one-time fix. Every content update, new page, or design change can introduce new issues. We offer monthly monitoring plans that catch new issues before they become problems.

Accessibility statements: We draft accessibility statements for your website that communicate your commitment to accessibility, the standards you meet, and how users can report issues.

Training: We train your content team on how to create accessible content — writing effective alt text, using heading structure correctly, creating accessible PDFs, and testing their work with basic accessibility tools. This is often the most impactful service we provide because it prevents new issues from being created.
